Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week’s selections: rare-grooves, hiphop beats, dub, dub-step, rare funk, nujazz, jazzy nu soul, latin-jazz, funky breakbeats, and dance-floor jazz.

We start off with some vintage (1966!) piano-led jazz with proto hiphop beats from Canada’s own Galt MacDermot, who’s been sampled by the likes of Dilla and Handsome Boy Modeling School. We then get into an unreleased DJ Day track from 1999-2000 that still sounds fresh today. Then more unreleased beats, this time from Conceit out of California.

A classic dub gem circa 1977 from Augustus Pablo comes next, which transitions into a super bass-heavy wobbler of a dubstepper from Bass Clef. After that we hear some rare funk from “1984” and Gene Anderson before we hit some funky jazz by Herbie Williams, which leads into some new music from Jazzpresso, Clyde, and Nicole Willis.

We then take a step back into time with a rare latin-groover, a jazz-dancer, and a wild Brazilian track with feverish keys and real heavy bass. It all comes to a wrap with a very deep, beat-layered and sample-heavy killer from Dcastillo.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week’s mix is a blend of hiphop, rare grooves, some re-edits, and soul.
We get going with a sleazy hiphop instrumental, then a broken beat latin-tinged joint from DJ Day and keeping that sound with Bulljun’s “Sho’Nuff”, and Unconventional Science’s “Enojo”.

Then it’s onto a funk re-edit from Kenny Dope followed by some Turkish funk and an unreleased gem called “The Get It Now” before we hear some more sleazy sounds—this time it’s a rare-groover from Italy’s Armando Travaioli. We then move onto a heavy African funk-rock killer off a fairly new comp, which is followed by a nice rap re-edit from Graham Mushnik.

Unconventional Science comes back again with some sick beats before we hear some house music from Chromeo and some 2001 business from Brother of Soul. It all wraps up with some great soul from Joe Bravo and Annette Poindexter.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week’s mix is a blend of jazz, hiphop, soul, funky blues (?), rock, latin bangers, and samba. We get it going with an unreleased gem from PZ (I’m lovin’ his sound a lot lately!), then onto a 2007 track from Canada found on a Stones Throw comp, followed by a jazz classic.

Next up, we move into some instrumental action from Portugal circa 2002, then a couple from Bullion before we hear a couple of really nice remixes of classic soul and a 2007 hiphop anthem. After that, we get a funky ‘hand clapper’ from Bo Diddley, and one of my favourite classic rock tracks.

We then get into some latin heaters, a rare disco funk cut, classic samba from the Trio Macoto, and end it off with a quicky from Sputnik Brown.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week’s mix is all about jazz in the first half, starting with some beautiful sounds from Paul’s Pal, then some quirky jazz that came out earlier this year from Graham Mushnik, followed by a cinematic cut from the legendary Lalo Schifrin. Then it’s onto two of my all-time favourites that come in with heavy rhodes before we shift gears in the second half.

Next up, we move into some music for the b-boys with Unconventional Scienz, a bit of latin house from Jazz Juice, then back for a couple more tracks for the breakers. After that we hear a sweet Yosaku remix, then my favourite 80s techno track before ending off with some nujazz off the Jazz Biznizz 3 compilation.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week’s mix starts off with some pretty sick Airto produced fusion circa 1975, followed by some amazing ambient jazz, then a track by D’nell, which was massive with the underground crowd in 2004-2005 and still sounds great today. After that, we hear some new music from French hiphop producer Wax Tailor, and an unreleased instrumental gem from Souljim.

Next, it’s a couple more unreleased tracks before we hear Ninja Tune recording artist Daedelus come in with his signature quirky breaks and beats. Then it’s onto a cinematic masterpiece from Grantby, brand new music from a group called “Ave.To”, and an electro-pop killer from N.E.R.D. that made me dance a few holes into my socks.

DJ Czech comes next with a wicked cut ’n’ paste dancer, followed by brand new music from Mr. Scruff. After that, it’s a wicked and very rare soulful groover from Dorsey Brockington. And it all comes to a finale with some unreleased stuff from the very talented “Mike the 2600 King” that should have been on an MPM compilation but was left off for *cough cough* reasons unknown.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week’s mix starts off with some buttery jazz, a rare groove classic, and a fantastic collabo between Jose James and Flying Lotus called “Visions Of Violet”. We then get into some cut ‘n’ paste from the Rebtuz label before we hear an edited version of a massive orchestral masterpiece that would normally clock in at over 10 minutes.

Then it’s onto another edit, this time from the ‘Shoes’ camp of a 1958 big band track by Miles Davis from the Porgy and Bess LP, which was an interpretation of the Gershwin original from 1935—thanks Google. We then shift gears a bit with some midtempo ambience from Odd Couple, Quiet Village, and re-edit biznizz from Reggie Ray.

Next up is a mashup from DJ Ayres, which is followed by some indie hiphop from The Project, and a European brass cover-band ditty that sounds familiar, but I just can’t place. We wrap up with some funky disco, and some classic jazz funk.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week’s mix is more “electro” in feel all the way through. Starting off with a couple of rare synth-laden library disco cuts from 1980 and 1978 respectively, we move into some dubby broken beat from Sonar Circle, then a quirky little track that will put a smile on your face if you’ve ever played Atari video games.

We then shift gears a bit with some really catchy (and really dirty) club music from Thunderheist before Daedelus brings in some Westcoast dublab flavours with “Drummery Jam”. One of my favourite tracks of 2008 comes in next, and then it’s straight dubstep filth from the grimy UK streets with Jazzsteppa, followed by a wobbly monster from genre heavyweights Benga and Skream circa 2004.

We then segue into some soulful 2-step electro from Mr. De, which sets up a massive dubstep anthem from Skream & Cluekid. Next up, it’s a bit of electro-infused house with a track called “Swing Ratio”, and it all comes to a wrap with a huge electro-pop track that’s been out for a while now but sounds oh so good in the summertime.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

We start off with some cinematic sounds from Graham Mushnik with a track that reminds me of ‘The Danube Incident’ by Lalo Schifrin. Then we get a library goody from Janko Nilovic under a pseudonym, ambient hiphop from Japan by Bottom Fly, then Flying Lotus-type hiphop from Oogenesis.

We then shift gears a bit with a couple of classic gems before we hear alt-rockers MGMT, hiphop from the Stones Throw camp, and an organ-filled break from Germany circa 1973. Next, UK library heavyweight John Cameron brings some menacing percussion-heavy jazz, which is followed up with a rare track from Eddy “Electric Avenue” Grant.

Random Heroes comes in after that with some funky cut-n-paste breaks from their 2006 EP on the Jack To Phono label, which is followed by a weird 70s French Library track with proto-hiphop beats. I threw in some house music next, and then added my second favourite Spank Rock cut. Next up is some dubstep from the 2007 comp ‘This Is Dubstep Vol 1’. I wish more dubstep sounded like this track.

It all comes to a wrap with more beats: a heavily layered cut-n-paste groove from a good Irish lad on Scribble Records, then a dark library-inspired hiphop instrumental from The Natural Yogurt Band on the Jazzman Label.

Enjoy!

We start off with some cinematic sounds from Sonar Kollektiv, then a soulful bit from Jamie Lidell--no relation to Chuck, I’m sure. Then we get an unreleased goody from Graham Mushnik (scored from his flat mate and label mate via the web) before moving onto a latin rare-groover by Black Sugar.

We keep on with the rare grooves from Ellipsis (re-issued by Jazzman Records), Newban (needs to be re-issued), Makonde Soseme (off a Kon & Amir comp) and Ray & His Court.

Yosaku comes in next with an unreleased twisted Latin treat before a Rick James re-edit is heard. Next is some rare Afro business, followed by a rare version of a 90s house classic, and then some rock from the Tremeloes.

It all comes to a wrap with A-ko’s amazing 2005 (I think) release on MPM records called “Chessha 23”, which is a psychedelic hiphop trip, and then a very recent release from Graham Mushnik on Catapulte records www.catapulterecords.com.

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

We start off with ambient hiphop sounds from Milla, 40 Winks, and a couple more from talented Toronto teenager Jesse Futerman, whose sound is like a cross between David Axelrod and J. Dilla. Check him out at www.myspace.com/supertoastor

The ambience keeps on with a Hipster Wonkaz track, and then we get into some lyrics with Monster Maker and their cut “Pain To The Picture”. Seiji brings the next 2 tracks with his signature breakbeat and wobbly jazz sounds to heat things up.

The heat continues with Kenny Dope’s amazing remix of a James Brown classic. We then get into some samba and a couple of uptempo rare groove tracks before ending things off with some classic sample-fodder in “Found A Child”

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

We start off with a rhodes-filled hiphop soundscape by Odetta, which then transitions into a choppy-piano breakbeat groover by AYB’s own Bulljun. We then turn to 6 minutes of madness from Gaslamp Killer, who has played along side Flying Lotus, and is taking hiphop to strange new levels.

Next up is a track by the Dynamics doing a dubbed-out ska rendition of Herbie Hancock’s 80’s breakdance classic “Rockit”. We then get into a mashup that fuses the B’more sound with a well-known dubstepper by Skream. After that, I threw in one of my favourite ‘funky 2-step soul’ cuts (if I can call it that) by the Capprells.

A dope Canadian folk-funk cut comes next, and it’s followed up with a bit of B’more from DJ Ayres before Azymuth gets ill with some crazy Brazilian disco. From there, we hit the dirty South with Tone Tank before we hear a chopped up jazz track from Skalpel that my girl was humming earlier in the day.

It all comes to a wrap with a beat-heavy rare groover by Blossom Dearie.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

We start off with some ambient hiphop breaks from a strange outfit called “She’s Dead” and follow up with Toronto’s Jesse Futerman before we get into a mashup that blends 2 of my favourite tracks. After that, we hear something from the Nutsons (I love their style) and DJ Shadow.

After that, we hear a track that was submitted by a man called Jendor who waxes nostalgic with lyrics about hiphop’s golden era—name-dropping all the greats: from Kool DJ Herc to Biggie to Naz. Then it’s onto some tight jazzy hiphop loops from Bulljun, some drum n bass action from Mudfoot Jones, and a bossa jazzdance classic by Willis Jackson.

We then get into another mashup, this time it’s a Lil Mama track layered over “Tequila”. Then it’s a dubby Brazilian drum ‘n bass track by Dubben that sets up a pair of classic Brazilian fusion gems.

It all comes to a wrap with a remix of Tal M Klein’s latest cut, and finally, a little something out of the Melting Pot camp by a group called Koliphones.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

We start off with some breaks-filled funky children’s music (!) from the early 70s, followed by a rare funk gem, and then a Northern soul classic from Charles Sheffield that was used for a Levi’s commercial a loooong time ago for their 501 jeans.

Next up is a track that was used for Lily Allen’s “Knock ‘em Out”, then it’s onto some very rare latin-funk by Jae’s Soul before we hear a fantastic slice of soul and funk from Dee Edwards, James Young, and the Everyday People.

Some new music from Toronto’s “Do Right!” label is next with a track by Cutty Lark, then we transition to some party-themed nujazz by Tom Central, and a couple of nice jazz-fusion gems by Mr. Circle, and Jazz Celula from 1970’s Czecheslovakia.

It all comes to a wrap with a rare-groover from the Turner Brothers, and finally, a very rare disco floor-filler (with a sweet break in the middle) called “Let Yourself Go” by a little known group called “Sparkle”, which was comped recently by Kon & Amir, and also by Joey Negro.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

We start off with some beautiful jazz comped on the Dusty Fingers series from the legendary Art Farmer before moving onto a couple jazz tracks from 2008 by Carlos Nino and Kira Neris. A touch of dubstep gets mixed into the pot before we catch a new joint from Cali’s own Flying Lotus.

Next, it’s DJ Me DJ You with their brand of bizarro hiphop, and then it’s onto more new music, this time from Ireland’s BDI on Scribble records and a track called “Cherry Cherry Cherry”, which makes good use of a French Library sample.

It’s house music after that with Super Collider, Young Lovers, a classic from Joey Beltram, and something new-ish from the Sunburst Band A.K.A. house music legend Joey Negro.

Tom Central is next with a re-edited latin groover before some proper hiphop instrumentals from Ugly Duckling and Buck 65 are heard. It all comes to a close with the UK’s DJ Maniphest and his track “Restored Faith”.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

I'm back after a nice (and much needed) 2 week vacation...

We start off with some downtempo hiphop from the amazing 40 Winks crew and shift into some sick indie hiphop courtesy of Danger Doom before we hear some good Brazilian jazz from Heavy Joker.

Next, it’s a beautiful re-edit of a Radiohead classic that I have been playing over and over at home before shifting to a strange groover by France’s hiphop weirdo Pilooski. Then it’s on to a Lennon/McCartney-esque beauty called ‘Would It Be Impossible’, and then the wonderful Village Callers doing their live rendition of Sergio Mendes’ ‘The Frog’.

Mr Scruff and Quantic team up for a nice little joint, then we hear an obscure jazz track before we dip into a bit of funk and soul. After that, Esther Williams brings in some great vocal jazz before we close out with a modal jazz track, and finally, a bizarre yet absolutely killer version of ‘The Godfather’ theme.

Enjoy!

I'm back after a nice (and much needed) 2 week vacation...

We start off with some downtempo hiphop from the amazing 40 Winks crew and shift into some sick indie hiphop courtesy of Danger Doom before we hear some good Brazilian jazz from Heavy Joker.

This week’s mix is all jazzy hiphop loops. These are strictly out of the ordinary instrumentals. Like all my mixes, this was a ‘one taker’, so you’ll hear a few small errors. It’s more about the music in the mixes rather than the mix itself, and these are all outstanding tracks!

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week’s mix gets going with a Brazilian jazz classic called “Nebulosa” and takes a soulful turn with a Weldon Irvine classic. The Lions bring in some bass-heavy and dubby afrobeat, and then I threw in a well-known 50s Motown classic that I heard on TV earlier in the day—it seemed like the right thing to do.

Francis Lai is next with a track that one of my listeners just loves and can’t get enough of. Then we get into a bit of R’n’B before hearing an updated version of a Bob Marley classic. After a brief dubby excursion, the mix shifts into disco with the next two tracks, and then a vibes-filled break off a recent compilation courtesy of Mr. Thing.

Hebrew Rogers brings some funky rock to the mix before we hear some dirty 70s Jamaican disco from Barry Waite. After that, I threw in a re-edit of a Brazilian jazz track before ending off with a mad Bollywood break.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week’s mix gets started off with some deep, ambient, cinematic sounds from Italy (Piero Piccioni), the U.S. (Al Hirt), the U.K. (Roger Webb) and Germany (the Vampires). Then the 5th track is a sick violin and drum break workout that I suspect is from France—it’s an absolute killer!

Stark Reality is next with a mind-melter called “Dreams”. It’s rock. It’s jazz. It has a deep groove, wicked bass, and heavy drum breaks. It’s an amazing track that would appeal to open-minded rock lovers, B-boys, and jazz aficionados…it’s just wicked. After that, you’ll hear something by Free Design remixed by hiphop god Madlib, which is then followed by some heavy nujazz, then an old school hiphop classic by A Tribe Called Quest.

Next is a cut ‘n’ paste break from Greece by a b-boy named Thanos from the Palov & Mishkin camp, then some really nice but obscure soul by Delia Gartrell, and some funkrock from Crystal Mansion. The Jazzinvaders are heard after that, and then a couple of nu-latin breaks that will appeal to lovers of the “Los Hermanos Latinos” sound. It all comes to a wrap with a track that slipped under the radar in 2007 called “Fairchild” by the Scottish dub and breaks maestro, Pablo, of Redhook records.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

There were some glitches in the podcast site that prevented me from getting this episode up on time, but the problems are fixed now. This week gets going with some downtempo jazzy breaks from TM Juke, then some sweet sounds from Q with ‘String Break’ and a lost classic flipped by DJ Day.

Drum ‘n’ Bass is the order of the day for the next five tracks from Dusty, Kid Gusto, Rory More, Commix, and the Hai Karate Allstars. I snuck in one of my favourite hiphop tracks by Devil McDoom, and then veered off into electro-disco territory with Justice v Simian, and Bis.

An 80s classic is blended in next, then a straight up disco track is given the Dmitri From Paris treatment to close out the mix.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week’s mix gets started off with a spacey downtempo beat courtesy of Brenk off the Melting Pot Label, which puts out some amazing music by dudes like DJ Day, Devil McDoom, and A-ko. Check the MySpace pages of those guys to hear what I’m talking about.

Anyway, I mixed in a track by Phat Kev after that, and I have to thank my man Richie in the UK for sorting that one out. Sweet tune! The Free Design is next with a jazzy folk-funk track I recently discovered, and then it’s a rare groove boogie-ish classic from 1979 by 9th Creation.

Some amazing late 60s obscure soul is next by the Dynamic Tints off the Twinights Lunar compilation, then it’s the old school hiphop classic by the legendary Eric B & Rakim “Don’t Sweat The Technique”, followed by the humourous and stylish Ugly Duckling. A hot funk track is next by Billy Garner, which was sampled by DJ Day for his incredible “Gone Bad” back in late 2005 (December, I think).

After that, I threw in a deep and kind of crazy African disco tune by The Coffins before mixing in an edit of the Rick James party classic “Give It To Me”. The transition was quite shabby as it was done without a monitor—not a wise move on my part, but I’m not prefect.

Justice’s well-known and well-played techno-disco track came in after that, then it was a couple of deep house joints by the Motor City Drum Ensemble.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week’s mix gets started off with a NEW Sounding Out The City intro. I felt it was time to change it up, and I hope you all enjoy it. After the intro, I get into a nice library track by Keith Mansfield from the KPM 1068 sound book called “Gold Medal” and transition to a tune by Jonny Trunk (a mad library collector who put out a book on the genre).

A re-edit of the Free Design’s rendition of the Door’s classic “Light My Fire” comes next, then it’s off to Mars with a sick, fuzzy funk track by the Invaders, and Sheeba’s funky version of “Jungle Fever”. We hear a bit of Brazilian heat from Trio Mocoto before getting into some beat-heavy and bizarre electro-synth disco (?!), then Kid Kanevil’s “Ill Connoisseur” gets thrown in.

After that, I get into some disco with Two Man Sound, followed by Stringfield Family’s “Sound of Disco Rock”, then a B’more-ish joint that tears up a James Brown classic before getting into one of my favourites from Beck. The mix ends off on a house music classic by Steve Poindexter, and finally, Joe Bataan’s amazing “Latin Strut”

Enjoy!

This week’s mix gets started with some ‘library-esque’ sounds from Ch3vy before moving onto some proper R&B by Sweden’s Kissey Asplund, then onto some dusty nugget weirdness by Liliental and Maker.

Indian Ropeman is up next with some nice downtempo goodness before The Koliphones take things to another level with a sick track called “Voyage in the Sun”. I then dropped an old house favourite by Int’l Pony (circa 2003), follwed by a nice Jon Kennedy rework, and then a couple B’more-type joints by Ayers and Tittsworth.

Gears get shifted once more for a remixed punk rock track by Adam Kesher, then Tarantino’s “Death Proof” end credit tune “Chick Habit” before closing out on some house-y type stuff. So, it’s a mish-mash of goodies all round and I hope you dig it.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week’s mix is kind of on the ambient side of breakbeats during the first half, delving into some left-field hiphop from Maker, The Nutsons, and Sound Providers. Then there’s some genre-defying goodness from Pilooski and Cut Chemist.

The pace picks up a bit at the 15 minute mark with “6 ft Wasp” by Fila Brazilia (thanks for sorting that tune out Richie!), and one of my favourites “Bedsheet Shuffle” with it’s sick dubby-spy sounds. Simply wicked.

Then it’s on to some proper funky breaks with Flash Callahan from the Jalapeno label. After that, it’s a dope, sleazy and deep Detriot house groover by Linkwood--the same outfit that did “Piece of Mind”, which got plenty of play by Gilles Peterson. This one is at least as good as “Piece of Mind” in my opinion.

It all wraps up with a remix of a 2001 (?) house track I first heard during my Saint Germain Café compilation days (as a listener, not a contributor).

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week, I'm pleased to present an all funk and soul 45 mix by special guest DJ Double K of Parkdale Funk.

http://www.parkdalefunk.com

You're about to hear rare records that the man from Toronto has picked up over time by spending countless hours excavating from thrift shops, yard sales, record stores and ebay--to say nothing of the hard cash he's dropped in the process.

He's condensed some of his terrific finds into a 1 hour mix for this podcast, which is split into 2 parts.

Check it out, and send the man some love via the link to his site on the right of this page.

This week is a trip through some rare groove</itunes:subtitle>

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City…

This week is a trip through some rare grooves, a bit of downtempo, a warm Rhodes-filled house track, a wild disco romp, some bangin’ afro-funk, a deadly reggae-fied cover of a soul classic, and a dope Spank Rock-produced hiphop gem. It’s fantastic stuff that needs to be heard by the musically open-minded, yet discerning listener.

Anyway, all of the tracks have very distinct sounds and elements to them, and there are seemingly disparate genres thrown in, but I think they work well blended together in this mix because elements of jazz and soul are heard in every track.

The one track that really does it for me on this mix is #8, which is a cover of a Fela Kuti track called “Let’s Start”, and is a discovery that was released back in March 2007 by the Soundways label. It was performed by a Colombian band from Medellin in the 70s and is an absolute afro-latin funk monster. The brass on this track is just jaw-dropping when paired with the heavy percussion. Massive sounds!!

Enjoy!
