Episode #093 - Movement 1

(60 downloads)

Download this mix (30 min)
Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

Lots of good dusty tracks this week including some jazz, soul, library, afrobeat, latin, and disco.

We start out with some modal jazz from Carla Bley and get into some uplifting jazz from Open Sky Unit. Then we hear a fantastic soul classic from Dusty Springfield, a library groove from Flowers & Morgan, and a jazzfunk stormer from Gene Ammons.

After that, it’s a couple of Afrobeat tracks followed by a couple of Latin tracks. Then it’s some house music from Moonstarr and rock (?) from Whitest Boy Alive’s latest album. From there, it’s a killer disco track from Panache, which is heavy on piano and sounds amazing. We then finish up with a rare latin-tinged dancefloor jazz track from Marius Cultier.

Enjoy!

Episode #092 - Shades of Time

(74 downloads)

Download this mix (30 min)
Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week start out with a little known Stevie Wonder track sampled by Madlib and follow up with some nice reggae sounds from Jackie Mitoo (in Sound Dimension), GRC, and a reggae re-edit of an 80s hiphop classic.

We then shift to some afro funk with Polyversal Souls, some great jazz from Klaus Lenz and Allen Toussaint, and some disco from Alfredo De La Fe. From there we get Kid Gusto re-working an Eddie Drennon disco track, and a nice retro boogie track from the Jalapeno label.

Then it’s onto some heavy afro jazzrock sounds from the Asiko Rock Group followed by a latin classic from Roberto Roena, and we end off on a nice disco track off the very rare Guinness label—not related to the world’s finest ale, but probably go good together!

Enjoy!

On this week’s podcast: Funk!

I just got back from a nice vacation in Mexico and had a great time!

It’s been a while since I’ve laid down some funk, and so it’s all warm funky goodness in this 30-minute set.

I hope you had a great holiday season!

Enjoy!

My Profile

Driftwood

I started out making mixes for myself to listen to during drives and subway rides. Somewhere along the way, I thought other people might enjoy the music in the mixes as much as I do, so I began posting them. My wish is simply to share what I consider to be really good yet seldom heard music with others.

You'll hear 30 minute mixes that incorporate rare grooves from the past along with the modern sounds of today, and a dash of various flavours--from latin jazz, to disco, to classic rock, to sample-based beat oriented styles and beyond.

Please leave a comment if you like what you are hearing and share this podcast with others.

For your requests, questions, or just to get in touch, email: soundingoutthecity@hotmail.com
Cheers.
