Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...
We start out with some mellow (?) dubstep from Bass Clef and an uptempo electronic genre-bender from young and talented Canadian Jesse Futerman. Then it’s more genre-defying business from The Long Lost with LA’s Flying Lotus on remix duty—wicked tune!
Hot Coins comes in next with some nice electro before we hear Erykah Badu flipped by Captain Planet. A couple of DJ Day productions come after that before we catch one of Japan’s deadliest beat-makers in “Eternal Reflection”
From there, we hear some sweet RnB from Wayna, beautiful Brazilian music from Trio Esperanca, and a nice bossa-fused broken beat goody from Tal M Klein.
It all comes to a wrap with a couple of old grooves, including Gino Dentie’s take on Brass Construction’s classic “Movin’ On”
Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...
On this week’s podcast: Funk, Disco, Breaks, Boogie, House
I let the songs play a bit longer than usual this week, and I’m not sure if it’s because I was lazy or if I was especially feeling these tracks…
Anyway, we get going with some classic funk from Deep Heat and the legendary Bernard Purdie before hearing some new Jazzanova material. We then go back in time for a few minutes to hear “People” by Ellipsis, which is such an amazing song and feels right for these times.
After that, we hear a sick little disco edit of Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown”, then a fantastic nudisco gem complete with some good synth and Feist supplying the vocals. Then it’s onto a really nice breaks track from the Funk Weapons label—perfect for the dancefloor. We keep the boogie sound going with The Snapp, then return to some music released earlier this year by Clyde.
It all comes to a wrap with a sick and wobbly house track from Sinden, and a nice collaboration featuring Santogold, Julian Casablancas (from the Strokes) and Pharell called “My Drivethru”.
Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...
On this week’s podcast: Downtempo, Hard Funk, Hiphop, Soul, Breaks
Don’t know what the weather is like in your area, but it is colder than a witch’s tit in my town. I’ve thrown in some tracks that will make you move and warm up, but we start it off nice and easy with some downtempo from Crackpot, Tipsy and Presto. From there, we heat up some greasy funk from the Grits and some fuzzy afrobeat goodness from Chico Mann (of Antibalas).
Next up, it’s ODB of Wu Tang over some jazzy reggae rhythms. After that, it’s more hiphop from CL Smooth and Presto, then it’s two of the best soul tracks I’ve ever heard from Bobby Reed and Alice Clark. We finish up with a fantastic disco track from Cindy Rodriguez, a flipped Bob Marley track, and a nice break from Sunny Face.
Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...
On this week’s podcast: downtempo, rare grooves, funk, underground disco, weird shit.
We start out with some ambience from dubstep maestro Bass Clef and follow up with 2 beautifully layered beatscapes from MPM heroes A-Ko and DJ Day.
We then move onto some raregrooves and funk by Gene Chandler, The Rimshots, and Standard Of Living.
After that, we turn up the tempo with some underground disco from Mellow Madness and Sparkle. Then it’s onto some classic 1980s videogame sounds with breakbeats behind it courtesy of John Arnold. A trippy electronic ‘sound collage’ by trip-hop duo “Tipsy” comes in next, and we wrap it all up with a track from Chin Chin, and Sonara Casino.
Enjoy!

My Profile
Driftwood
I started out making mixes for myself to listen to during drives and subway rides. Somewhere along the way, I thought other people might enjoy the music in the mixes as much as I do, so I began posting them.
My wish is simply to share what I consider to be really good yet seldom heard music with others.
You'll hear 30 minute mixes that incorporate rare grooves from the past along with the modern sounds of today, and a dash of various flavours--from latin jazz, to disco, to classic rock, to sample-based beat oriented styles and beyond.
Please leave a comment if you like what you are hearing and share this podcast with others.
