Episode #085 - Crawfish

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

On this week’s podcast: downtempo, re-edits, disco, psych

We start out with some chilled beats from Canada’s own Koushik, 40 Winks (Belgium), Veebeeo (US?), Hipster Wonkaz (AKA, Inverse Cinematics), and French duo Onra & Quetzal.

We then move onto a loungey-latin edit from the Bstrd Boots series and continue with a couple more re-edits: one from a track by “The King” himself, Elvis, updated by Pilooski. The other is a well-known classic from the legendary Marvin Gaye re-edited by the mysterious Beatstalkers.

Then we get into some Kraak & Smaak business, followed by some private press disco from Belle Farms Estate. King Most comes in after that with more ‘new’ disco before we hear a psych-rock track that absolutely slays. It all comes to a wrap with one of Jesse Futerman’s latest tracks: Platinum Dog, which is a filter-swept, deep and wobbly house track. It sounds like a dubstepper but with a danceable uptempo 4/4 beat. Wicked.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

On this week’s podcast: hiphop, brazilian, rare grooves, deep house

We start out with indie hiphop producer extraordinaire, Madlib, and another one of his crazy beats, then follow it up with more beats from a track off Moonstarr’s latest (and super dope) called ‘Break It Down’. After that, it’s a mashup that blends sweet soul from the legendary Marvin Gaye with a revivalist brass band that covered Gaye’s classic ‘Sexual Healing’ last year.

Then we move into some killer Brazilian heat, with grooves by the likes of Antonio Adolfo, Trio Mocoto, Claudette Soares, and Sergio Mendes. Next up, we hear one of my all-time favourite rare groovers by a group called Pamoja, which then sets up a track called ‘Sound & Vision’ that has been stuck in my head because of a Rhapsody commercial I keep catching.

We then come to a close with some great deep house—some old tracks, and some brand new.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

On this week’s podcast: rare grooves, reggae, re-edits, 50s R&B, broken beats

We start out with a fairly new (2007-2008) ambient breaks track from the Landau Orchestra and an old and rare ambient track (1970) from the Toomorrow (sic) original soundtrack. Then it’s onto some hard beat downtempo courtesy of California’s DJ Day, followed by some beautiful and breezy sounds from Sweden’s 1970s cover band extraordinaire, “The Gimmicks”.

After that, we shift into some a re-edit of some dubby business from The Specials, and a rare funk tune from Steady Wailin’ Sid called “Spirit of ‘76”.
A brand new R&B track from newcomer Brittany Bosco is next, which deftly samples a nice Chakachas track. We then turn to some old R&B from the 50s, which must have been a big party track in the day and would do well even today.

We then get into some reggae from Leroy Sibbles before getting wild with the percussion in tracks from drummer Malcolm Catto, and a brand new one from Canada’s broken beat legend, Moonstarr.

Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

On this week’s podcast: vintage grooves, funky jazz, drum n bass, 2-step soul, and breaks.

We start out with a couple of dusty breaks from Gentle Rain and Karl Heinz Schafer before moving to some funky jazz from Steve Grossman. Then we get a Madlib remix of a Jazzanova classic, followed by a jazzy drum n bass tune.

It’s a bit of house after that from Trus’me, then modern northern soul before we hear a couple classics from amazing singers Salena Jones and Anita O’Day.
Some Latin jazzdance comes in next, and then we hear a couple of rare 2-step soul tracks.

We get back into some drum n bass with a track I’ve played a lot lately, then finish up with some genre-bending goodies from Graham Mushnik, and DJ me DJ you.

Enjoy!

My Profile

Driftwood

I started out making mixes for myself to listen to during drives and subway rides. Somewhere along the way, I thought other people might enjoy the music in the mixes as much as I do, so I began posting them. My wish is simply to share what I consider to be really good yet seldom heard music with others.

You'll hear 30 minute mixes that incorporate rare grooves from the past along with the modern sounds of today, and a dash of various flavours--from latin jazz, to disco, to classic rock, to sample-based beat oriented styles and beyond.

Please leave a comment if you like what you are hearing and share this podcast with others.

For your requests, questions, or just to get in touch, email: soundingoutthecity@hotmail.com
Cheers.
