Sounding Out The City
Where the sounds are "light on the attitude, heavy on the beat." You'll hear rare grooves, hard jazz, heavy funk, broken beats, library grooves, house, deep soul, Latin flavours, Brazilian vibes, left-field hiphop, rock, drum n bass, afro-beats--all these sounds and more, hand picked and blended fresh into 30-minute mixes, Wednesdays at noon.

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City…
This week is a trip through some rare grooves, a bit of downtempo, a warm Rhodes-filled house track, a wild disco romp, some bangin’ afro-funk, a deadly reggae-fied cover of a soul classic, and a dope Spank Rock-produced hiphop gem. It’s fantastic stuff that needs to be heard by the musically open-minded, yet discerning listener.
Anyway, all of the tracks have very distinct sounds and elements to them, and there are seemingly disparate genres thrown in, but I think they work well blended together in this mix because elements of jazz and soul are heard in every track.
The one track that really does it for me on this mix is #8, which is a cover of a Fela Kuti track called “Let’s Start”, and is a discovery that was released back in March 2007 by the Soundways label. It was performed by a Colombian band from Medellin in the 70s and is an absolute afro-latin funk monster. The brass on this track is just jaw-dropping when paired with the heavy percussion. Massive sounds!!
Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City…
This week’s mix is a blend of ambient downtempo breaks in the form of library exotica, hiphop beats, funky mashups, and heavy sampling of sound snippets and effects. It’s an auditory trip, but a good one I think.
From the lush, beautiful and haunting sounds of Stringtronics, Unforscene and the Assemblers, to the hiphop of K15 and 40 Winks, and the weirdness of DJ Me DJ You, it’s a warm journey to the fringes for the musically open-minded.
Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City…
This week’s mix starts off with one of my favourite library tracks by Guy Boyer, although I suspect it is a slight re-edit (as is done on the Dusty Fingers comps) of his “Bongos and Sound” on the French Neuilly label.
Next up is maybe my favourite jazz track of all time, “Nightingale”. It’s a true stormer, a jazzdance classic, and jazz heads know it quite well. You seriously need to hear it if you haven't...it's THAT good.
After that, I dropped a track by a German punk band (yes, punk) called the Beatsteaks. Don’t let the description fool you: it is soulful and somewhat “pop-like” (poppy? pop-ish??) and you would never suspect they were German as they sound American, or possibly British on this track.
Then Mark Ronson is up with a dope mini-mix of tunes from his 2007 album “Version”, which is real dope btw. Then I blend some Brazilian bizniz into the mix with a few Black Betty club faves before DJ Spinna brings the B-boy flave (circa 1999) to set up Cut Chemist’s minty remix of an old Tito Puente track.
After that, we hear a lil DJ Mink (circa 1997) before some really good nujazz from the Auratones sets up a wicked and soulful boogie joint by Malone and Barnes.
It all comes to a wrap with sample-fodder produced by rock band “Chicago” back in 1979 and used by “The Bucketheads” (AKA MAW, AKA Kenny Dope & Louie Vega) for their amazing 1995 house classic “The Bomb (These Sounds Fall Into My Mind)”
Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...
This week I'm posting an episode (#028) that somehow got lost when transferring my podcast from an old site to this one. If only I could find #014...
Anyway, we start off with a rare groover by Al Foster and follow up with a library breaks favourite off the DeWolfe label called "Hard Hitter", then Charly Antolini comes in with the party themed Uela Uela. Heavy percussion as always on all the tracks.
Next, we get into some ghetto Latin funk rock, and a rare Jimi Hendrix track with heavy drums, massive bass, distortion and wild guitar. We then get into a bit of reggae with a classic by Shark Wilson, followed by a sweet R&B track by TV actor Alan Thicke's son, Robin. We move onto a big soul track sung with lots of heart by Marie Queenie Lyons. Essential stuff.
We get funky with Miami, electronic with Pepe Delux, and drum breaks galore with Perry Knudsen before the All Good Funk Alliance set up a classic drug rock song by Harry "Lime in The Coconut" Nilsson. We transition nicely to a Polish jazz cut-up edit by Skalpel--an oldie, but a goodie.
We finish up with a nice tune from a recent EP by the mighty Pablo, AKA Butch Cassidy Soundsystem, and the mix ends with a wicked-yet-bizarre rap tune circa 1982 by oft sampled disco legend Gary Davis.

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...
This week's mix starts off a little dubby with Troubleman, and delves into some rare grooves, and a hot Brazilian tune before moving into some Latin sounds.
Tracks 8 to 12 are all Latin breaks, and they are hot! If you like Los Hermanos Latinos, you will definitely enjoy these 5 sureshots.
We then get back into some rare groove with the Pharoahs before dropping a sick little mashup of Lil Mama and The Champs.
It all comes to a close with a nice version of "Shack Up" by Bis, which I would characterize as minimal electro (?) with Atari video game effects...? I really suck at identifying genres, but check it! It's good :)
Enjoy!

Driftwood
I started out making mixes for myself to listen to during drives and subway rides. Somewhere along the way, I thought other people might enjoy the music in the mixes as much as I do, so I began posting them.
My wish is simply to share what I consider to be really good yet seldom heard music with others.
You'll hear 30 minute mixes that incorporate rare grooves from the past along with the modern sounds of today, and a dash of various flavours--from latin jazz, to disco, to classic rock, to sample-based beat oriented styles and beyond.
Please leave a comment if you like what you are hearing and share this podcast with others.
