Sounding Out The City
Where the sounds are "light on the attitude, heavy on the beat." You'll hear rare grooves, hard jazz, heavy funk, broken beats, library grooves, house, deep soul, Latin flavours, Brazilian vibes, left-field hiphop, rock, drum n bass, afro-beats--all these sounds and more, hand picked and blended fresh into 30-minute mixes, Wednesdays at noon.

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...
We start off with some cinematic sounds from Graham Mushnik with a track that reminds me of ‘The Danube Incident’ by Lalo Schifrin. Then we get a library goody from Janko Nilovic under a pseudonym, ambient hiphop from Japan by Bottom Fly, then Flying Lotus-type hiphop from Oogenesis.
We then shift gears a bit with a couple of classic gems before we hear alt-rockers MGMT, hiphop from the Stones Throw camp, and an organ-filled break from Germany circa 1973. Next, UK library heavyweight John Cameron brings some menacing percussion-heavy jazz, which is followed up with a rare track from Eddy “Electric Avenue” Grant.
Random Heroes comes in after that with some funky cut-n-paste breaks from their 2006 EP on the Jack To Phono label, which is followed by a weird 70s French Library track with proto-hiphop beats. I threw in some house music next, and then added my second favourite Spank Rock cut. Next up is some dubstep from the 2007 comp ‘This Is Dubstep Vol 1’. I wish more dubstep sounded like this track.
It all comes to a wrap with more beats: a heavily layered cut-n-paste groove from a good Irish lad on Scribble Records, then a dark library-inspired hiphop instrumental from The Natural Yogurt Band on the Jazzman Label.
Enjoy!

I started out making mixes for myself to listen to during drives and subway rides. Somewhere along the way, I thought other people might enjoy the music in the mixes as much as I do, so I began posting them.
My wish is simply to share what I consider to be really good yet seldom heard music with others.
You'll hear 30 minute mixes that incorporate rare grooves from the past along with the modern sounds of today, and a dash of various flavours--from latin jazz, to disco, to classic rock, to sample-based beat oriented styles and beyond.
Please leave a comment if you like what you are hearing and share this podcast with others.
