Episode #039 – The Mad Sh!t

(160 downloads)

Download this mix (30 min)
Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week, it’s all uptempo sounds with big beats, jazzy loops, funky drums, and soulful sounds. I don’t know what genre this kind of music falls under...is it hiphop? Is it breakbeat? Is it house?...maybe a bit of each here and there. Who knows, but it’s music that will make you nod your head, stomp your feet, pop, lock, and break.

The selections are new, new-ish, and not-so-new, but all standouts in my view. So if you like uptempo instrumental hiphop, or jazzy stuff with big beats, or broken beats with your house music, then you’ll like this mix.

And even if this doesn't sound like your thing, try it anyway! You just might like it, and you might even catch yourself nodding your head to the beats like a possessed fiend.

Enjoy.

Episode #038 - Closing In

(146 downloads)

Download this mix (29 min)
Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week, we start it off with some cinematic downtempo sounds from Grantby, and some cut ‘n paste trickery by Featurecast, followed by a nice, beat-heavy Bstrd Boots re-edit of an obscure (to me) Motown track Stevie Wonder sang in Italian (!!) It’s really good. Trust me. Next up, we get into some breaks-filled and jazzy 60’s go-go weirdness by Boca 45, with a brief Kermit The Frog sample in it (wtf?!?). Again, it’s really good. Trust me.

Then we get the legendary Bob Dylan pairing up with Mark Ronson and his brand of hiphop production. I’ve definitely indulged in some musical oddities this week, but they’re all stormers. Trust me. Anyway, after that, Hai Karate mash up an obscure (to me) 60’s soul ditty with their fine blend of beats and filters, then DJ Format takes it to the floor for the breakers with “2,3…Scrape”.

Next up, Ursula 1000’s lovely “Boop” gets the Skeewiff treatment with great results, and we go a little deep on the house side with “Closing In” by the mighty Bronx Dogs of “Weya Funk” fame. After a brief stop off with a couple oldschool funk joints, DJ T brings some minimal electro-fused boogie before Diplo’s amazing remix of “Gold Lion” by the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s pushes you onto the dancefloor.

The mix finishes up with some deep house courtesy of Trevor Lovey’s super groovy “The Crossing” and a real nice edit of an amazing, soulful (and very tasteful) disco track called “The Stranger” by the C. Henry Woods Troupe.

Enjoy.

Episode #037 - Silver Lining

(147 downloads)

Download this mix (30 min)
Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City…

This week, we start it off with some dope hiphop breaks from Japan’s Bulljun (of AYB fame, I think), and my favourite producer of the moment, DJ Day. It gets dubby after that on “Aristocratic Badboy” before the QSO brings in some afro-latin heat with “Melodious Wayfarer”, which is followed up with the bass-heavy soulful sounds of “Everytime” by Restless Soul and Zansika’s lovely vocals.

A crazed but dope French outfit called “Chinese Man” mashes up oldtyme swing jazz with hard hiphop beats on “Artichaut” (sick!), and some classic Irakere provides some oldschool latin breaks to the mix. A lil jazzy broken beat from Stockholm Cyclo is next before some seriously ill latin re-edit/mashed sounds come through from Sono Rhizmo and Tontelas. Both tracks are highly recommended!

The mix finishes up with some broken beats courtesy of a remixed Romanowski joint, then it’s oldschool boogie with the classic sounds of Gary Davis, and a couple of obscure but truly wicked tracks…especially “Silver Lining”, which is boogie at it’s best IMO.

Episode #036 - Swing Down

(119 downloads)

Download this mix (30 min)
Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...

This week, it’s straight party shots from beginning to end. There’s a good blend of funk, soul, disco, mashups, broken beat and re-edits for the music heads in this mix. But I’m not sure that the ‘Young Folks’ instrumental was a good choice...maybe the vocal version would have been better.

In any case, take a listen and share it with a friend...

My Profile

Driftwood

I started out making mixes for myself to listen to during drives and subway rides. Somewhere along the way, I thought other people might enjoy the music in the mixes as much as I do, so I began posting them. My wish is simply to share what I consider to be really good yet seldom heard music with others.

You'll hear 30 minute mixes that incorporate rare grooves from the past along with the modern sounds of today, and a dash of various flavours--from latin jazz, to disco, to classic rock, to sample-based beat oriented styles and beyond.

Please leave a comment if you like what you are hearing and share this podcast with others.

For your requests, questions, or just to get in touch, email: soundingoutthecity@hotmail.com
Cheers.
