Sounding Out The City

You'll hear rare grooves, hard jazz, heavy funk, broken beats, library grooves, house, deep soul, Latin flavours, Brazilian vibes, left-field hiphop, rock, drum n bass, afro-beats--all these sounds and more, hand picked and blended fresh into 30-minute mixes, Wednesdays at noon.

Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City...
This week’s selections: rare-grooves, hiphop beats, dub, dub-step, rare funk, nujazz, jazzy nu soul, latin-jazz, funky breakbeats, and dance-floor jazz.
We start off with some vintage (1966!) piano-led jazz with proto hiphop beats from Canada’s own Galt MacDermot, who’s been sampled by the likes of Dilla and Handsome Boy Modeling School. We then get into an unreleased DJ Day track from 1999-2000 that still sounds fresh today. Then more unreleased beats, this time from Conceit out of California.
A classic dub gem circa 1977 from Augustus Pablo comes next, which transitions into a super bass-heavy wobbler of a dubstepper from Bass Clef. After that we hear some rare funk from “1984” and Gene Anderson before we hit some funky jazz by Herbie Williams, which leads into some new music from Jazzpresso, Clyde, and Nicole Willis.
We then take a step back into time with a rare latin-groover, a jazz-dancer, and a wild Brazilian track with feverish keys and real heavy bass. It all comes to a wrap with a very deep, beat-layered and sample-heavy killer from Dcastillo.
Enjoy!

My Profile
Driftwood
I started out making mixes for myself to listen to during drives and subway rides. Somewhere along the way, I thought other people might enjoy the music in the mixes as much as I do, so I began posting them.
My wish is simply to share what I consider to be really good yet seldom heard music with others.
You'll hear 30 minute mixes that incorporate rare grooves from the past along with the modern sounds of today, and a dash of various flavours--from latin jazz, to disco, to classic rock, to sample-based beat oriented styles and beyond.
Please leave a comment if you like what you are hearing and share this podcast with others.
